Andaleeb Cartonera Handcrafts Editions of ‘Poems for Palestine’

At a recent action, Andaleeb Cartonera — a cardboard book press based in Madison, Wisconsin, USA — produced handcrafted editions of Poems for Palestine: Recent Poems by Nine Palestinian Poets & Actions You Can Take to Stop Genocide Now. The slender anthology, brought together by the Publishers for Palestine collective, features work by Refaat Al-Areer, Fady Joudah, Hiba Abu Nada, Olivia Elias, Samir Abu Hawwash, Maya Murry, Ahlam Bsharat, Basman Aldirawi, and Ghassan Zaqtan.

Publishers around the world are encouraged to print and share free copies of the chapbook.

The Andaleeb Cartonra publishing project, according to organizers, follows the Latin American model of independent cardboard presses (“cartoneras”), small and alternative publishers that produce low-cost, handcrafted books using recycled cardboard. They write: “We’ll distribute the titles we publish on campus, in the community, little free libraries, etc., and we’ll also organize exhibits in local bookstores. This is not for profit, and we will not be selling the books we produce.”

They shared a few photos from the event:

Other books they’ve produced include Write My Name by Zeina Azzam, Open Letter from U.S. Physicians and Nurses After Visit to Gaza / We Volunteered at a Gaza Hospital. What We Saw Was Unspeakable, by Dr. Mark Perlmutter & Dr. Feroze Sidhwa, Don’t Wait to Stop Another Genocide, by Esty Dinur, and Criticism of Israel Is Not Antisemitic: UW Faculty and Staff Commit to a Clear Definition of Antisemitism.
